The dark and stormy night was the first room we tackled that night at Exit Richmond. In the scenario, a merchant accuses your son of possessing gems stolen from one of his shops. You know for a fact that the merchant planted the gems, but you have no proof. With your son’s trial happening tomorrow, you must investigate and find evidence at the merchant’s mansion. We liked this scenario because it was well-detailed with a clear goal.

The decor was okay but a bit basic. There was only one main room with a tiny second room, and there wasn’t any music playing. However, the storm special effects were well done! We also didn’t like that there were numerous signs saying ‘do not touch.’ There were just too many of them. We also noticed that the decor did not match the storyline that well. The game master wasn’t very enthusiastic about his job, but he did tell us the story from memory before starting the game.

The puzzles were fun to solve, but there weren’t many of them. They were a mix of traditional locks and automatic mechanisms. The game was non-linear, meaning we could do many things simultaneously. We also liked how the clues for all the puzzles were hidden around the room; they weren’t that obvious so we had to look for them. However, we felt that the puzzles didn’t match the theme or the storyline. The hints were given through an iPad. When we needed a hint, the iPad would give us a clue, (that turned out to be useless) and the next option was to see the answer. We don’t really like this way of giving hints.

Overall, we didn’t enjoy this escape room much because of the decor and puzzles. It’s not really scary although it’s a bit dark so young kids may find it scary and it would be better suited for smaller groups of 2-3 people. We are happy with our performance as we completed the room with time to spare and only used one hint. We didn’t really like it, but we escaped!
