Escape Hour
– Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Played on July 10th, 2022by:

We begin our evening at Escape hour in Edmonton with Five Lives. Here’s the scenario: are you ready to embark on a spatiotemporal journey with inner transformations, logical tasks, and athletic obstacles? You’ll have an hour to repair a spaceship, pass through a club in San Francisco, escape from the boiler room, and finally avoid a nuclear catastrophe while remaining unnoticed like true ninjas. The theme and concept of this escape room is intriguing and it got us really curious about it.

We have never experienced an escape room like that before. It’s almost not an escape game, but more of an obstacle course in our opinion. The space is huge and some rooms are really impressive while some others are more basic. One downside is that there wasn’t any music; it could have been interesting to have different music related to the theme of each life.

We didn’t like the puzzles in this escape room as it didn’t feel logical and the flow wasn’t great. We had to do random things, and we didn’t always understand what needed to be done. It wasn’t always clear either with a lot of trial and error. The puzzles were mainly mechanisms and manipulation games. Some puzzles were also repetitive as you often have to do the same thing several times. The game master gives hints using a walkie-talkie. It’s not our favorite method, but it’s not the worst either.

Overall, this isn’t the type of escape room that we like as the puzzles weren’t that great. If you enjoy obstacle courses and you don’t like intellectual puzzles much, you will probably like it. It’s also a room you can do with kids. We’re not happy with our performance because we didn’t manage to finish it even after asking for 4 hints. They let us finish anyway with an additional 3 minutes. We didn’t like it and we didn’t escape!
