The Forgotten Cathedral was the last room we did that day at Escaparium in Laval. In this scenario, a cathedral nestled in the heart of Escaparium Laval’s complex has been classified as a world heritage site. Archaeological excavations and restorations have been underway for several years, leading to the discovery of a mysterious cult called “The Order.” Many artifacts have been found and are currently under investigation. We’re invited for a guided tour of this amazing cathedral. We liked the scenario, especially because we had no idea what to expect. It’s mysterious, well-detailed, and we appreciated how they incorporated their business into the story. We had heard about this escape room from many people and were excited to try it, knowing it has won awards and received great feedback from friends.

The decor was absolutely mind-blowing—it felt like being on a movie set. The space is massive, with numerous rooms, and the attention to detail and finishing touches is perfect. We’ve never seen anything like it anywhere else. The room clearly had a huge budget, and it was well spent. Our game master was also excellent in her role, adding to the experience. The special effects were incredibly impressive; it’s the best immersion we’ve ever seen. We were terrified almost the entire time, but there was one extreme element where we felt a panic button or a way to make it stop would have been appropriate. It felt a bit unsettling not to have a way out if someone panicked, though we understand it’s part of the game, and we were warned beforehand that it’s a scary room.

The puzzles were mostly task-oriented, often involving placing objects in specific spots. There weren’t many puzzles with multiple steps, and we had to wait between actions for the audio and special effects to finish before moving on. This isn’t something we particularly enjoy, as we prefer working at our own pace. All the puzzles were automatic mechanisms, strictly linked to the story, and very creative. Everything worked perfectly, but the lack of complex puzzles and the slower flow was a bit of a downside for us. If you are looking for one of the most realistic and amazing haunted house ever, you are going to love this escape room! The hints were given by the game master, who played a character related to the story, via an audio system we could hear in the room. However, it seemed like she couldn’t hear us back, which became a bit annoying towards the end.

Overall, we were completely blown away by the set design, immersion, and special effects. While the puzzles weren’t the best we’ve encountered, this room is definitely worth trying for the decor and overall experience. It’s very scary and not suitable for young kids, but teenagers who enjoy being scared would likely love it. It’s better suited for groups of four people. We weren’t entirely happy with our performance, even though we escaped—we wished we had been braver! We liked it and we escaped!
