Serial Killer Charade was the second room that we’ve done that day at Room escape Ottawa. In this scenario, a series of disappearances has unsettled a quiet mountain town. The locals suspect witchcraft and rituals. Our team was tasked with finding the victims. After extensive searching, we set up camp in an abandoned cabin. As the sun sets, the real nightmare begins. The scenario and objective of the escape room were good, but somewhat unclear. The theme involves disappearances and witchcraft, yet the setting is a cabin. Additionally, the room’s title reveals the twist that it’s actually about a serial killer. And we start in a small prison cell but the scenario doesn’t explain why.
The decor was well-executed and realistic. The immersion was excellent, creating a suitably creepy and tense atmosphere. The room featured horror-themed music to amplify the fear factor but there wasn’t any jump-scares. We liked that the escape game is big and has a lot of rooms to open and discover. However, a small downside was that we had to leave our personal belongings in the first room.

The puzzles were all related to the murderer theme. They were varied, logical, and plentiful, but not overly difficult. Most puzzles involved traditional locks, with a few automatic mechanisms. The game wasn’t entirely linear, allowing us to work on multiple puzzles at the same time. Hints appeared on a TV screen after we requested them using a walkie-talkie, with no character interaction from the game master.
Overall, we enjoyed this escape room because of the credible decor and engaging puzzles. If, like us, you enjoy a moderately scary room, this one is perfect for a small group of 2-3 friends. It’s not recommended for young children, but teenagers would likely enjoy it. We were okay about our performance, wishing we had completed it faster and without needing two hints. We liked it and escaped!
