Devil’s Toy Store is the first room we tried that day at Freeing Canada station in Richmond Hill. In this scenario, as the night goes by, you and your friends are walking home from a carnival. A cool autumn breeze pushes you towards a house down the road. You feel yourself drawn toward the dark mansion. It’s not out of curiosity though—you feel a phantasmic feeling pulling you in, step by step. Before you know it, you are at the steps of the house, then inside, then in front of a dark hallway. The hallway is dark, so you begin to walk. And then, just like that, you feel your feet stop, along with your heart… We like the scenario because it’s really mysterious and detailed!
The decor was quite disappointing on many points. It was only one room with a few pieces of furniture inside. We come into the room and it’s completely dark, so we have to find a way to get light. Once the lights are on, you discover that it’s just a room with black curtains on the walls and creepy accessories. With a scenario like that, we were expecting so much more! It would have been easy to have a creepy kid’s room wallpaper. Using the curtains felt very lazy to us. The scenario was promising more than what we got. However, we liked that there was music playing during the game and that the game master explained the rules and story before starting the game.

The puzzles were fun to solve and were all related to the creepy theme. They only had traditional locks, and the game master asked us to place the locks in a bowl near the entrance so that putting them back would be easier for her. There were only 5 puzzles in the room, which is very little for a 60-minute room! We were very disappointed by that, especially because they weren’t that hard. So basically you spend some time finding light, solve 5 easy puzzles, and you are done. We thought that the room had so much more potential than that. To get a hint, we ask on a walkie-talkie and the game master comes in to help.
Overall, this room was disappointing because of the lazy decor and the lack of puzzles. The room is scary if you don’t like darkness, but otherwise there are no jump scares or actors. It’s better suited for small groups of 2–3 people. We are happy with our performance because we completed the room quickly and didn’t need any hints. We didn’t like it, but we escaped!
