Under investigation: Criminals was the second room we tried at Défi Évasion in Lévis. In this scenario, a police lieutenant dropped dead at his work desk—poisoned. The main suspects are us, his coworkers. We are put in prison, and we need to find three pieces of evidence to be indicted and escape! We liked the scenario because it’s well detailed and the goal is clear!

The set designs were well done and fairly realistic. The layout of the rooms made sense with the story, although it didn’t quite match a map that was used for a puzzle. There may have been a missing wow factor in the decor, as there was nothing we hadn’t seen before. That said, we understand that it’s difficult to be original with a prison theme. We enjoyed the music playing during the game. There’s another room with the same story, but you play from the investigator’s perspective. So if you have a big group, you can also play both rooms as a competitive challenge, which is a cool feature!

The puzzles were fun to solve and varied. They were all related to the theme and story. The balance between traditional locks and automatic mechanisms was perfect. The game master welcomed us while impersonating a character and brought us to the room. The hints were provided on wooden sheets in the room, but they weren’t very helpful. Otherwise, the game master would call to offer help, but we weren’t allowed to ask for hints ourselves.

Overall, we liked the room because the puzzles and decor were well done, even though the latter were a bit basic. This is a family-friendly room and better suited for groups of 2-3 people. We are happy with our performance because we completed the room with time to spare and needed only two hints. We liked it, and we escaped!
