The Plague was the second room we did that evening at Room Escape Atlantic. In this scenario, it’s 1347, and strange lesions have appeared on the ship’s crew. With rumors of the Black Death ravaging European cities, the crew starts searching for a cure. They make port in Italy and find a plague doctor. Enticed by promises of gold and fine jewels, the doctor agrees to come aboard. Soon enough, the crew discovers that the doctor is a fraud, and they fall victim to his fake cures. Our goal is to find the cure and escape the plague doctor before it’s too late. We liked the scenario because the plague twist made it different from other classic pirate themes. It’s also well-detailed and has a clear goal.

The decor was nice and well done. However, it’s a shame that the experience was limited to just one room and a tiny closet. We started the game in handcuffs, but the scenario didn’t explain why. We assumed it was because the imposter doctor was holding us prisoner, but it would have been helpful if this were mentioned in the story. Additionally, the absence of music detracted from the atmosphere, and we could hear everyone in the hall, which was distracting.

The puzzles were fun but felt more like games than traditional puzzles. Once again, this room only used traditional locks with four letters or numbers. It’s a linear room, meaning we worked on one puzzle at a time. Also, the clues for each puzzle were all found together in the same place and were used for the next puzzle, rather than being discovered randomly. We felt that the game provided too much information on how to solve the puzzles. Hints were given via a phone, which was fine.

Overall, we liked the room’s decor but were not impressed with the puzzles. It’s not scary at all but some parts of the decor might be for kids and it’s better suited for smaller groups of 2-3 people. We are happy with our performance, as we completed the room with a lot of time to spare and didn’t ask for hints. We thought it was okay, and we escaped!
