Gold Rush was the first room we tackled at The Escape Game in San Francisco. In this scenario, during the California gold rush, our uncle Clyde Hamilton made quite a fortune for himself. Now that he has passed, he offered us a chance to claim that gold. We have 60 minutes to get into his cabin and find the gold! We thought this was a good classic scenario that was well-detailed and had a clear goal.
The decor was beautiful, with great attention to detail and final touches. It looked brand new and really felt like a real cabin. There’s also a pretty unique way of navigating between two of the rooms. On the downside, inside the cabin, there were mostly just boxes and not much actual furniture that we would find in a cabin. Also, there weren’t many things that weren’t part of the puzzles. We would have like for clues to be hidden better among random objects. There were no lockers to store our belongings, so we had to bring them into the room with us. We listened to the rules and story intro on a TV while in the room. They also allowed us to take pictures of the decor, which is usually forbidden in most escape rooms.

The puzzles were fun to solve and all unique. There was a nice variety of logic puzzles, and there was a lot to solve. They were all related to the theme and struck the perfect balance between traditional locks, automatic mechanisms, and manipulation puzzles. The puzzles were not that hard, so you don’t need experience with escape rooms to succeed. For the hints, we pressed a button near the entrance of the room, and the game master would write the hint on a screen.
Overall, we had a great time in this room as we loved the puzzles and the decor. It’s not scary at all, so kids would have a great time. We think it’s better suited for smaller groups of 2-3 people. We are happy with our performance, as we completed the room with a lot of time left and only asked for one hint. We loved it and we escaped!
