The Penitentiary was the third room we played that evening at Omventure! In this scenario, we wake up locked in a cramped prison cell — cold, scared, and confused. We quickly realize we’re trapped inside St. Temple Prison, an abandoned penitentiary infamous for claiming the lives of its inmates. If we don’t want to be next, we’ll have to escape fast! We really liked this scenario because it was detailed, and had a clear goal. The twist of the prison being haunted and deadly added great tension and atmosphere.
The decor was impressive and well maintained, with excellent attention to detail. We loved the steampunk aesthetic and how it gave the space a gritty, eerie charm. Starting off separated in individual cells added an exciting challenge and made teamwork essential. Unlike other games at this location, this game isn’t a “guided” one — meaning there are no interruptions from videos or audio clips between puzzles — which helped maintain the flow. The background music also did a great job enhancing the atmosphere and immersion.

The puzzles were creative, engaging, and fit perfectly with the story. There was a nice balance between traditional locks and automatic mechanisms. The room is linear, so we could only work on one puzzle at a time, but each one was interesting and complex enough to keep everyone busy and involved. Hints were provided by the game master through a walkie-talkie, though they didn’t play a character in this room.
Overall, we really enjoyed The Penitentiary because the decor and immersion were fantastic, and the puzzles were well thought out. It’s a family-friendly room, though it might be a bit tough for younger kids. We think it’s best suited for a group of four. We’re proud of our performance because we escaped quickly and didn’t need any hints! We liked it, and we escaped!
