Game over escape rooms

Orient Express was the only room we tried that day at Game Over in Mississauga. In this scenario, a murder has taken place aboard the famous train, and two passengers have mysteriously disappeared. Before everyone is gathered in the dining car for questioning, you receive a secret message from Hercule Poirot asking you to stay behind and investigate on your own. With one hour to uncover the truth before he finishes interrogating the suspects, it’s up to you to find the murderer. As a fan of Hercule Poirot, I really enjoyed that this room is inspired by Agatha Christie’s work. The story is excellent, well written, and nicely detailed.

We were very impressed by how realistic the layout of the room was—it truly felt like being on a train. There were many rooms to discover, and the way you move between them was very original and surprising. The designers had some great ideas and did an overall solid job with the decor. That said, some of the finishing touches felt a bit rough, and a few props were worn out and could benefit from repairs or replacement. The puzzles were well integrated into the decor and made sense within the story. Unfortunately, there was no music playing during the game, only a few sound effects. Adding music would definitely have improved the immersion.

The puzzles were fun to solve and all connected to the theme and storyline. There was a lot to do, but since the room was linear, we had to work on the same puzzles at the same time. There was one traditional lock, with the rest relying on automatic mechanisms. We liked having to move back and forth between rooms to find clues and solve puzzles. The difficulty level varied nicely: some puzzles were multi-step and more complex, while others were simpler. We especially appreciated the originality and creativity of the puzzles. Hints were provided on a screen in the room, and we could choose between three different hint levels.

Overall, we enjoyed this room because of the strong decor and fun puzzles. We just wish some props were in better condition and that music had been added. The room is family-friendly and best suited for groups of 2–3 people. We were happy with our performance—we completed the room with time to spare and only asked for two hints. We liked it, and we escaped!
